SPORT TRANSFER NEWS: Mbappe Lastly Sign For PSG As Transfer Window Draws To A Close

The 18-year-old striker has followed in the footsteps of Neymar
by joining the Parc des Princes side.
Paris Saint-Germain have pulled off their latest coup in the
transfer market by completing the signing of Kylian Mbappe
from Monaco.
The 18-year-old striker was the subject of intense transfer
speculation all summer but has finally joined his hometown club,
initially on loan but with the club having a compulsory purchase
clause in the deal that means he will arrive on a permanent
basis next summer.
At that time, he is expected to become the world’s second most
expensive player, with the deal reported to be as much as €180
million. PSG have already smashed the world transfer record
this summer, having acquired Neymar from Barcelona for
€222m.
As a result of that deal, they could not also afford to sign
Mbappe and stay within UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP)
regulations, hence the move is simply a loan to begin with.

The teenager is regarded as one of the hottest properties in the
game, having exploded into Monaco’s starting XI in the second
half of last season by scoring 26 times in 44 matches.
He has earned widespread praise, with Juventus great Gianluigi
Buffon dubbing him a “future Lionel Messi or
Cristiano Ronaldo”.
Mbappe has, though, been used sparingly at the start of the
new season, given the speculation around his future, with a
whole host of Europe’s top clubs having been linked with a
move at one stage or another.
The 18-year-old forward started the French Super Cup defeat to
PSG, and then Monaco’s first Ligue 1 game of the new
campaign, but has since been an unused substitute or left out
of the squad entirely.

Ibadan chieftaincy: Oyo State Governor Ajimobi Boast, My enemies will praise me one day

The Oyo State Governor, Abiola
Ajimobi , has said that those who
opposed his decision to initiate a
review of the Ibadan chieftaincy
system would, one day, make a U- Turn
and praise him for the idea .
The review commission recommended
the installation of more kings in
Ibadan, leading to the coronation of 21
new kings on Sunday .
The governor, who spoke on Thursday
at the opening of the rehabilitated
Mobil Junction - Are - Oluyole- Wema
Bank, Apata Road , expressed his
unhappiness over some of the
comments of the Olubadan of Ibadan
land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, which he
said were political .

He said the monarch should place the
good and future of Ibadan land ahead
of other considerations .
Ajimobi said , “ Those who abuse us for
crowning Obas now will praise us in
the future . Some have politicised the
matter.
“ Chief Obafemi Awolowo was then
abused for introducing free education ;
but he was praised afterwards. I did
not do the crowning of Obas for
myself.
“ Why do I want to hinder others from
becoming what they want to be ?
Whoever God has destined will become
whatever he or she wants to be .
“ Moreover , I am not in the race to
become an Oba . Many administrations
since Governor McGregor have
attempted changes to the Olubadan
chieftaincy . It was known as Baale in
the 1930 s before it was known as
Olubadan.
“ I am not into any battle with the
Olubadan, but he should dissociate
himself from those with political
interests.
“ The Olubadan is a good father. I can ’ t
disrespect the Olubadan; but I know
there are those using Olubadan ’s name
to promote their interests , especially
those that we have defeated politically .
“ Anyone who believes in God is not
interested in hindering the progress of
anyone. Moreover , this honour is
befitting for our kings and this event
today looks more glamorous . I am
glad.”

that his child is also affected by the
current ongoing strike action by the
Academic Staff Union of Universities,

Ngige revealed this when he spoke with state house
correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting.
He said, “I have my child at home as we speak. Government is
leaving no stone unturned to make sure that we reach a
conclusive agreement with ASUU so that they can go back to
classroom.”

supposed to take their exams and
promotional exams have been forced by

Strike: I’ve not been invited to attend any meeting with the FG – Says ASUU president

The President, Academic Staff Union of
Universities, Prof . Biodun Ogunyemi,
on Wednesday said he has not been
invited to any meeting with
government officials.
Ogunyemi said the Federal
Government had only responded to its
August 28 , 2017 letter , in which the
union had listed the minimum
demands that must be met before it
would call off the ongoing strike .
He added that the union would
deliberate on the response before
accepting or rejecting the offer .
“ Yes , they (government ) have
responded to our letter and we are
discussing with them . We will discuss
their offer with our members and then
get back to them , ” he said on the
telephone, but declined to provide
further details.

When asked if the union had a
meeting with government officials on
Wednesday , Ogunyemi said , “ No, I
have not been invited to any meeting,
we have only received a response to
our letter .”
ASUU had, on Tuesday , boycotted a
scheduled meeting with a Federal
Government delegation in Abuja.
Asked if the government had paid the
N23 bn , a source stated , “ No, I didn’ t
think they have paid anything . They
have an offer to what they said they
would pay and ASUU gave what it said
was a counter position .”
The Minister of Education, Adamu
Adamu, had said on August 18 , 2017
that the Federal Government had
offered to release N23 bn to ASUU .
The government had insisted that the
sum of N30 bn released to the
universities should be subjected to
forensic investigation .
Investigation by one of our
correspondents revealed that there
were no signs that the meeting
scheduled to hold between the union
and the government on Wednesday or
Thursday would take place .
Officials of the ministry , who confided
in The PUNCH, said there was no
mention of the meeting from the office
of the Minister of Labour and
Employment .
It was learnt that the minister would
have a meeting with the National
Association of Resident Doctors in his
office at 10 am on Thursday .
The PUNCH could not get the Deputy
Director in charge of Press , Mr. Samuel
Olowookere , and the Special Assistant
to the Minister , Mr. Nwachukwu
Obidiwe, to comment on the issue as
they did not return calls to their
telephones on Thursday .
The Federal Government’s negotiation
team with the striking Academic Staff
Union of Universities will now be
headed by Vice - President Yemi
Osinbajo.

The Minister of Labour and
Employment , Dr. Chris Ngige , said this
during an interview with State House
correspondents at the end of
Wednesday ’s Federal Executive
Council meeting presided over by
President Muhammadu Buhari at the
Presidential Villa , Abuja.
Ngige said the government would
ensure that an agreement was reached
so that the striking university teachers
could return to work.
The minister stated, “ The government
thanks the parents and even the
students, who are supposed to take
their examinations now but have been
forced by circumstances beyond their
control to stay at home . I have one of
my children at home as we speak .
“ Government will make sure that we
reach a conclusive agreement with
ASUU so that they can go back to the
classrooms . This is the first national
strike that this government is facing
and we want to discuss .
“ At council today , the Vice - President
has taken over some of the aspects of
the negotiations and discussions. So,
we are continuing the meeting in his
office and when we finish meeting, we
will get back to ASUU for another
round of meeting.
“ We are hopeful that we will be able to
go to an appreciable extent to solve
some of the outstanding issues that are
preventing them from going back to
work.”
